  • Indian Railways is expanding multitracking on its seven High-Density Networks (HDNs) to reduce congestion, improve freight movement and lower logistics costs.
  • Cabinet approved 8 multitracking projects covering 1,196 km, worth ₹20,804 crore.
  • HDNs: Seven major passenger-freight corridors covering 11,051 km (~16% of railway network) but carrying >40% of total rail traffic.
  • Planned capacity: 70–80% utilisation is considered desirable to avoid congestion.
  • Multitracking: Expanding routes from 2 to 4 or more lines to increase train-handling capacity.
  • Freight share: Railways accounts for about 27% of India's freight transport.
  • 2025–26 freight loading: 1,670 million tonnes; target 3,000 million tonnes by 2030.
  • Average freight-train speed remains around 25 km/h
  • Seven High-Density Networks: Delhi–Guwahati, Mumbai–Delhi, Howrah–Delhi, Mumbai–Howrah, Mumbai–Chennai, Delhi–Chennai, Chennai–Howrah
  • Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs): Eastern DFC: Ludhiana (Punjab)–Sonnagar (Bihar); primarily coal and mineral traffic. || Western DFC: Connects the western ports, including JNPT/Mumbai, Pipavav, Mundra and Kandla, with northern freight destinations.
  • Both are operational and together handle about 420 freight trains/day.
  • Proposed East–West DFC: Dankuni (West Bengal)–Surat (Gujarat), 1,738 km.
  • Other proposed corridors: East Coast: Kharagpur–Vijayawada; North–South: Itarsi–Vijayawada via Nagpur.
  • Dedicated Freight Corridors are specialised railway routes primarily designed for freight trains, allowing freight to be separated from congested passenger routes.
  • The National Rail Plan aims to increase railways' role in freight transport and address capacity constraints on major railway routes.
